Schwervon! Is Matt Roth (guitar) and Nan Turner (drums). They are a duo on stage and in life, sharing an apartment in the lower east side of NYC with their cat Gummo.
Their music is a celebration of imperfect love through jagged rock minimalism.
They go to couple’s therapy. They don’t always leave their baggage at the door. Sometimes they write lyrics on the train. Sometimes they steal lines from eavesdropping on other people’s conversations. They were DIY long before it was a marketing strategy, mixing and recording the bulk of their music in their cramped Manhattan apartment.
Low Blow, the couple’s fourth album, finds them moving into a dark-as-fuck and anthemic pop territory simultaneously. Ominous guitar cracks of thunder open up into sunny rainbows of harmony.
There are political songs like “Wake and Bomb” that begin with a conflict over leaving the house early on a Sunday morning, but that then turn into a missive on consumerism and US foreign policy. The song “Jad Fair” recalls an evening watching the Half-Japanese documentary, but then unfolds into an exploration on boundaries and self-expression, and “losing the box that tells me what to do”. “Balloon” with its lyric, “everybody wants to hold the light” touches on questions of cultural alienation while persuading the listener to remain hopeful about art.
Matt and Nan’s tongues are a bit in their cheeks at the between-song-tracks, one which they titled “What we talk about when we don’t talk about love”, an homage to writer Raymond Carver.
Schwervon! Rocks out like Goths in pastel colors. They defy every burst of dread with a sugar rush so rich it makes your eyes water.
